Chipping Like a Pro: 4 Drills for a Sharper Short Game – Members

Struggling to get up and down around the greens? These chipping drills will sharpen your touch, improve your contact, and help turn bogeys into pars at County Longford Golf Club.

1. Landing Zone Drill

Purpose: Improve distance control and trajectory.
How: Place a towel or alignment stick 2–3 yards onto the green. Try to land every chip on the target zone. This helps you control where the ball lands and rolls out.

2. One-Club Challenge

Purpose: Learn to vary shot height and distance with one club.
How: Use just your 9-iron or PW and practice hitting high, medium, and low chips. Adjust stance and ball position rather than changing clubs.

3. Feet-Together Drill

Purpose: Encourage better contact and rhythm.
How: Hit chips with your feet together. This limits body movement and helps you focus on a clean strike with quiet hands.

4. Par-18 Game

Purpose: Bring real-game pressure into practice.
How: Pick 9 different chipping spots around the practice green. Give yourself 2 shots per “hole” (chip + putt). Score it like golf — par is 18. Try to beat your score each session.

Closing Tip:

Great chippers don’t just practice — they experiment and learn feel. Incorporate these drills into your routine, and you’ll start saving strokes fast.
